By Esther Drexler
The Franklin Square Little League 9/10 Girls Softball team accomplished what no other softball team their age has ever done. They made it to the State Championship game on July 27!
The girls from Franklin Square lost a close game and finished as the second best team in the state! The girls first won the District Championship beating New Hyde Park in front of a large crowd at Rath Park. Next were the NY Section 5 playoffs where perennial powerhouse Staten Island awaited. The girls from Franklin Square would have to beat Staten Island twice to win the Section Championship.
Game one was won by FS 1-0. Franklin Square's All Star, Destiny Nardello, pitched a one-hitter in the thrilling game. Game 2, the Championship game, would be played in hostile territory. In front of hundreds of fans in Staten Island the Franklin Square All Stars defeated Staten Island 4-3 in one of the most exciting games in FS Little League history.
Jenna Gallant and Natalie Schemmer drove in two runs apiece and the defense and stellar pitching did the rest. With the win Franklin Square was now one of six teams representing the state of NY fighting for the title of State Champion.
The FS girls were on fire winning their first three games of the State Tournament, outscoring their opponents 28-8! On Sunday, July 27, on a beautiful day in Nanuet, NY the girls lost the Championship game. It was their first loss as a team after winning 11 straight games on this historic run.
