Elmont’s Model UN Competes at Yale
Elmont Memorial High School participated in the prestigious Yale Model United Nations Conference from Jan. 21- Jan. 24 in New Haven, Connecticut.
The international conference included more than 1,600 students representing schools from 40 countries. Elmont students represented the nations of Sri Lanka and Ireland. Some of the committee topics included the Eurozone Crisis, Curbing Pollution, Human Trafficking, Counterterrorism and Ethnic Conflicts in Refugee Situations.
This Yale sponsored Model United Nations Conference was extra special for Harold Ekeh, Elmont MUN alumni, who served as one of the assistant secretary generals.
The twelve students represented Elmont Memorial High School well. The club’s President Isaiah Genao and the dedicated faculty advisers Nkenge Gilliam and Melvin Kohn led the The Elmont delegation returned with the following awards: Isaiah Genao - Disarmament and International Security Committee – Sri Lanka, Honorable Mention;
Marvin Pierre UNICEF – Ireland, Honorable Mention; Julie Nwaogbe WHO – Ireland, Outstanding Delegate; Christelle Thermidor UN WOMEN – Ireland, Honorable Mention and Fratianne Racine UNEP – Ireland, Best Delegate.
