VLTs for Belmont: Excitement for Elmont and the Future of Racing
By Patrick Nicolosi, Chair of Fair Share for Our Communities
Video Lottery Terminals, or the common term (VLT's) at Belmont Race Track, is the most exciting news to hit Elmont in more than the 50 years. Those of us who have lived here for at least 40 years remember Belmont Race track as a lively entertainment betting palace where movie stars as well as blue collar workers would rub elbows to place their bets.
Over the years, and because of the excitement of Hotel/Casinos or Racinos, and the excitement they offer, the crowds at Belmont no longer exist. The movie stars are gone, the blue collar worker looking for entertainment and excitement no longer come to Belmont located in Elmont.
Today, people who have money to spend on enjoyment and entertainment want more than simple horse racing. They want the excitment of a Hotel/Casino, shopping, stadiums, spa, restaurants and of course VLT's.
There is nothing new to this since most people who enjoy gambling, in a fun way, were always gambling even if it was ILLEGAL to do so. But today, with the legalization of VLT's in New York, and soon to come to Nassau and Suffolk counties, people can enjoy themselves closer to home and spend their money here.
Why would anyone argue against the many of us who enjoy going to a Hotel/Casino or Racino? We are all adults here, and it appears like that there are some local self appointed "community adults" telling us grown ups how to spend our money. They are simply kids, many who live with their parents still, telling us the VLT's at Belmont will bring all of society's ills upon us.
We have all worked hard, and we are now in a place in our lives were we want to enjoy ourselves without these "children" rallying against everything including legal gambling at a race track where gambling already exists! It makes me wonder why shouldn't Elmont get the jobs, economic development, revenue and excitement that is sorely needed? It also makes me wonder what the "children" are so afraid of?
Has any one taken a good look at the area around Belmont lately? There's nothing exciting about the crime , drugs and the criminals trying to steal new cars park at Belmont Race Track. Imagine what Belmont could be if we bring the excitment back with sports, VLT's , hotel, restaurants and more.
It's funny, many of these pretend "community child leaders" were just in school during the times when many of us met with developers, developed a vision plan and talked and worked with our local legislators. While they cry loudly, for all the things plans for Belmont will bring, they simply say "No" to everything. More importantly, they have no answers or ideas.
You almost feel like giving these "children" what I need to do with my grandchildren every once in a while. I give them a time out. They need one too. They need to grow up, and get a few years under their belts, before their actions bring bad decisions that might put an end to any new beginning for Elmont.
Why should Queens, Yonkers and the many other race tracks in this state get all the jobs, revenue and economic development? It's time for Elmont to move forward and get in the game. Bring on the VLT's to Belmont and let's see the people once again enjoying themselves at Belmont Race Track.
